U.S. deports three Nigerians for several offenses

Three Nigerian nationals have been deported from the United States after being charged with various offenses.

Reports indicate that their deportation is part of a broader move by the U.S. government to repatriate at least 3,000 Nigerians found guilty of different crimes.

The deportees arrived in Nigeria on Wednesday, May 14, aboard a Delta Airlines flight that landed at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos shortly before 9 a.m. They were received by officials from several Nigerian government agencies, who are expected to determine the next steps.

Under the administration of President Donald Trump, the U.S. has ramped up efforts to deport undocumented immigrants, as part of its policy to tighten immigration controls.

Within his first 100 days in office, President Trump launched an aggressive immigration crackdown, increasing arrests for immigration violations and authorizing detentions near schools and courthouses.

Additionally, on Monday, Trump signed an executive order instructing the Attorney General and the Secretary of Homeland Security to compile a list of so-called “sanctuary cities” that, according to administration officials, are not adequately cooperating with federal deportation initiatives.
