Tunisia releases 11 Russians held on terror charges

The group consisting of 11 Russians who were arrested on terrorism charges in November 2022 will return to their home country following their release from Tunisia authorities according to Russian state media reports on Friday.

Security forces discovered the Russian group in the region bordering Algeria from North Africa.

Russian media described their group as tourists yet Tunisian police reportedly took their equipment which did “not correspond to declared tourist purposes” according to Russia’s Tunis embassy.

Russia along with Tunisia have not shared information about this case to anyone.

The authorities of Tunisia maintained these individuals on suspicion they were involved in terrorist activities yet they received no official charges.

A TASS news agency announcement confirmed diplomat officials of Russia stated their team members had secured their release for departure on Friday.

Officials at the embassy confirmed that tickets were bought for their departure as they would depart through two scheduled flights during daylight hours.

The Russian state media reported that the group explored Roman landmarks located in Haidra which borders Algeria.

Russia has maintained its interest in visiting Tunisia as a tourist destination despite travel limitations from Ukraine because Tunisia remains economically accessible and demands no visa entrance from travelers.

Visitors rarely come to Haidra for tourism since it contains some of the oldest Roman ruins in northern Africa.
