Former Nigerian President Jonathan has been awarded the 2025 Sunhak Peace Prize

The Sunhak Peace Foundation in Seoul South Korea has declared Former President Goodluck Jonathan from Nigeria as the winner of the 2025 Founder’s Sunhak Peace Award.

Goodluck Ebele Azikiwe Jonathan served as the president of Nigeria from 2010 to 2015.

A press release from his Special Adviser Ikechukwu Eze disclosed that the former President of Nigeria secured the third award while becoming the initial African leader to win this Sunhak group which included Ban Ki-moon and Hun Sen.

The sixth annual 2025 awards competition will hold its event in Seoul from April 11th until April 13th when all laureates including Dr Jonathan will receive their honors.

Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan deserves his award

The Sunhak Peace Prize Committee declared that Dr. Jonathan receives the Founder’s Prize because of his ongoing mediating work combined with pro-democracy initiatives that promote African-wide peace-building across the continent.

The leadership direction of his organizations especially the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation GJF, the West African Elders Forum WAEF, and the International Summit Council for Peace ISCP together with the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation demonstrate his peace-oriented work.

The Sunhak Peace Award under the Founder’s category and the Sunhak Peace Prize are annually bestowed by the committee to commend individuals and organizations that advance world peace achievements alongside human development progress.

Sunhak Peace Prize Second Category Winners

The Sunhak Peace Prize second category winners include three distinguished individuals namely former Senegalese President Macky Sall and the AfDB President Akinwumi Adesina together with co-developer of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine Dame Sarah Catherine Gilbert and the Vaccine Alliance GAVI.

At the award ceremony, Jonathan will receive his honor together with three recipient individuals who were selected by José Manuel Durão Barroso and his committee members.

All recipients of this recognition consist of Patrick Awuah Jr. the President and Founding head of Ashesi University in Ghana and Hugh Evans who co-founded Global Citizen alongside Wanjira Mathai who works as Director for Africa at the World Resources Institute.

Hak Ja Han Moon speaks to reporters

Sunhak Peace Prize founder Hak Ja Han Moon disclosed in her pre-event speech that the lives of the laureates demonstrate how peace can be realized through specific actions along with cultural shifts.

She said;

Over the past decade, the Sunhak Peace Prize has identified and honoured individuals who have dedicated themselves to addressing urgent global challenges based on its three core values: respect for human rights, reconciliation of conflicts, and ecological conservation.

The Sunhak Peace Prize conducts its ceremonies every two years to honor people and organizations whose outstanding contributions make substantial impacts in sustainable human development and ecological conservation and conflict resolution.
