The Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) enhances its efforts against substandard tyres in circulation to protect road safety standards.
The Tyre Stakeholders’ Forum which SON organized at Apo Mechanic Village on Thursday focused on the national importance of tyre awareness. The forum proved essential for dealers to receive information about maintaining quality standards in the tyre industry.
During the event Dr. Ifeanyi Okeke in his capacity as SON’s Director-General instructed tyre retailers to establish quality-based standards in their supply networks.“Enough of substandard tyres. Retailers need to choose specific tire types they intend to offer customers for sale according to Okeke.
He warned about risks stemming from inferior tires during his presence as Director of North Regional Zone and especially in connection with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).The AfCFTA enables you to send your tires to any interested market across continental Africa. The commercial flow of foreign tires will take place through this country.

Observing our capacity to maintain inferior tyre products will lead to market exclusion when competitors supply their acceptable tyres to the region. And our industry leaves the marketplace,” he explained.
The Director General of Standards Organisation Nigeria told traders that their regulatory work focuses on improving road safety standards while strengthening market competition but will not restrict business operations.
According to him substandard items including tires present major worries for the DG which require raising awareness among tire dealers.
Mr. Samuel Akah expressed his support as chairman of the Abuja Automobile Dealers Association for the SON initiative while promising that dealers will adopt all specified requirements to maintain tyre quality.
Under the direction of Okeke the SON maintained successful cooperation with the trading sector.
Key stakeholders such as Federal Road Safety Corps and Nigeria Police Force delivered goodwill messages while Mr. Adetoyi Adeyinka presented about safety issues related to proper tyre preservation during the event.
