Oyo ex-governor, Omololu Olunloyo is dead

Chief Omololu Olunloyo, former Governor of Oyo State, has passed away at the age of 89, just days shy of his 90th birthday.

The respected elder statesman, renowned mathematician, engineer, and technocrat, died in the early hours of Sunday, April 6.

His passing was confirmed in a statement by Barrister Oladapo Ogunwusi, who conveyed the family’s sorrow and paid tribute to Olunloyo’s life of dedication and service. “With heavy hearts but immense gratitude to God, we announce the transition to glory of Dr. Victor Omololu Olunloyo — former governor of Oyo State, distinguished mathematician and engineer, and esteemed technocrat — a few days before his 90th birthday,” the statement read.

Olunloyo, who bore the traditional titles of Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, was celebrated for his significant contributions to academia and governance. He was the pioneering Rector of both the Polytechnic Ibadan and Kwara State Polytechnic, and he held several prominent roles throughout his illustrious career.

The Balogun of Oyo and Otun Bobasewa of Ife, Dr. Olunloyo, was the first Rector, Ibadan Polytechnic and first Rector, Kwara State Polytechnic, among other notable appointments,” the statement noted.

His long record of service to the nation and humanity is a source of pride to his family and associates, even as we come to grip with this devastating [loss],” it added.

The family has requested privacy as they mourn their loss.

“The Olunloyo family kindly asks for the understanding of the press and the public as they begin preparations to honour him with a befitting burial,” the statement read.
