Nigeria man bites off Malaysian police officer’s ear during arrest

A Nigerian national, Okenyehike Kelvin Obianke, was denied bail on Tuesday after pleading not guilty in a Malaysian magistrates’ court to allegedly biting off part of a police officer’s ear during an arrest in Kuala Lumpur.

The 38-year-old, identified as a private college student, is charged with inflicting grievous harm on Corporal Danielrul Azraq Ahmad Khair, 36, a member of the Sentul district police mobile patrol unit. The incident reportedly occurred outside a private clinic in Metro Prima, Kepong, at around 10:10 a.m. on April 25.

Obianke, who appeared in court unrepresented by legal counsel, claimed the act was not intentional.

“I am not guilty,” he stated when the charge, filed under Section 325 of the Penal Code, was read aloud. If found guilty, he could face up to seven years in prison and a fine.

According to Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, the officer sustained the injury during a violent episode in which the suspect bit off part of his left ear. The corporal had been responding to a distress call regarding a foreign man displaying erratic behavior at the clinic.

Sentul District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahari, confirmed that the severed portion of the officer’s ear has not yet been reattached due to concerns over a potential infection.

The doctor at Kuala Lumpur Hospital will reassess the injury before deciding on surgery, he stated.

In a separate court proceeding, Obianke also pleaded not guilty to charges of drug use and failing to produce valid travel documents. These alleged offences took place on April 25 and 26 and are being pursued under Malaysia’s Immigration Act and Dangerous Drugs Act.

Bail was again denied, and the court set June 10 as the date for further mention and the assignment of legal representation.
