Kano University shuts down female hostel over immorality

The management of Maryam Abacha American University of Nigeria (MAAUN), Kano, has directed the closure of two privately owned female hostels due to reports of alleged immoral activities.
The hostels affected, Al-Ansar Indabo Hostel on UDB Road and another in Hotoro, are both situated within walking distance of the university and had previously been approved as off-campus accommodations.

In an official statement, the Vice President of Campus Life, Dr. Hamza Garba, explained that the decision was based on complaints involving immoral behavior, poor water and electricity supply, incidents of student violence, and unauthorized late-night movements.

I am directed by the management to write, inform, and bring to the attention of our esteemed parents and students that the university has withdrawn its approval for Al-Ansar Indabo female students hostels located at UDB Road and Hotoro, he said
Students have been instructed to vacate the premises immediately after the conclusion of the fall semester examinations. The university also issued a warning that it will not be held responsible for any consequences resulting from non-compliance and is collaborating with security agencies to ensure the directive is enforced.
Whatever misconduct happened must have occurred outside, one student said.

Another source suggested that the closure may be more closely linked to inadequate facilities rather than moral concerns.
The affected hostels reportedly house around 500 female students, many of whom come from outside Kano. Some students have confirmed that arrangements are being made to relocate them to newly constructed hostels nearer to the campus, including one named in honor of a late student.
MAAUN currently lacks on-campus housing and depends on collaborations with private developers to provide student accommodation.
