FG: We freed 4,082 minor offenders, saving N1B yearly

The N1 billion annual cost savings combined with inmate releases of 4,082 people will help empty correctional facilities throughout the country.

During the yearly Ministerial Press Briefing in Abuja, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo informed attendees that President Bola Tinubu authorized raising the feeding allowances of inmates.

The President’s commitment to safeguarding all Nigerians’ constitutional liberties was emphasized by National Orientation and Information Minister Mohammed Idris.The number of correctional facilities Tinubu allowed to move from residential districts because of urban growth reached 29.

The facility’s distance from houses must extend to 100 meters per his recommendation.

The correctional center in Uyo confronts the Government House across the street while Suleja Prison has been enclosed by the surrounding community.

A total of nearly three thousand buildings found in more than two hundred forty correctional centers were undergoing construction work according to the interior minister. A group of these facilities was completed more than five decades ago and another facility dates back to 1914.

The Inspector-General of Police pointed out that two jailbreaks but no jail attacks occurred under President Tinubu’s administration since the system had better understanding of its past situation.

According to him, jailbreaks stem from internal inmate organization but jail attacks originate from external prisoners.

IDRIS declared Tinubu a true democrat when addressing the Ministerial Media Briefing Series which was hosted by the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.

According to Idris who was speaking at the Ministerial Media Briefing Series “He promotes constructive critique and healthy opposition because these serve as essential elements to build and strengthen our democratic system.”

The minister showed his gratitude to media professionals who maintained dedication throughout the briefing coverage.

The 2025 session happened at a momentous time since the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) was celebrating its 70th anniversary during that period.
