Court orders EFCC to release Aisha Achimugu within 24hrs

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court in Abuja has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to release prominent businesswoman and socialite Aisha Achimugu from its custody within 24 hours.

The order was issued on Wednesday after Achimugu appeared in court in connection with an ongoing EFCC investigation involving allegations of money laundering, criminal conspiracy, and unlawful possession of assets.

Justice Ekwo further instructed both parties to return to court on May 2 to provide an update on compliance with the order.

This development follows a previous court directive requiring Achimugu to voluntarily report to the EFCC’s Abuja headquarters, a condition she met after being arrested early Tuesday morning at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport upon her return from London.

Although Achimugu had earlier been questioned and granted administrative bail, the EFCC later declared her wanted, alleging she had violated her bail conditions.

ALLEGED MULTIMILLION NAIRA FRAUD CASE

The agency is investigating her alleged role in a multimillion-naira fraud case involving conspiracy to obtain money under false pretenses, money laundering, and corruption. Authorities also claim she owns property believed to have been acquired through illicit means.

Justice Ekwo’s recent order emphasized adherence to due process and instructed the EFCC to present Achimugu in court on April 30 for a status update—a directive the commission failed to follow.

The court’s firm stance highlights increasing scrutiny of the EFCC’s handling of high-profile cases, amid growing public concern over accountability, anti-corruption efforts, and respect for human rights.

As of press time, neither Achimugu nor the EFCC has issued a public statement regarding the ruling.
