Russia: China driving global change

Russia praised China on Monday for its prominent role in the global push to dismantle colonial and neocolonial structures.
The remarks were made by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, on the sidelines of the BRICS Council gathering in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Lavrov noted that the evolving dynamics of today’s world call for transformation, referencing a Chinese proverb: “God forbid you should live in an era of change.” He acknowledged that China is currently one of the leading drivers of this global shift, which he suggested may be both necessary and inevitable.

He concurred with Wang Yi that a struggle exists between advocates of a multipolar international order and those clinging to a unipolar system, which he said the West uses to dominate global affairs.
Lavrov emphasized that the emerging world order should be based on the principle of sovereign equality for all nations, as outlined in the United Nations Charter.
He concluded by stating that China, Russia, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), BRICS, and their allies are at the forefront of the fight for global justice and equality.

“This places a unique burden on us, particularly in achieving the goals established by our nations’ leaders,” the minister continued.
Lavrov informed Wang Yi that Russia is preparing to welcome President Xi Jinping for an official visit during the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory.
