For some users, ChatGPT has gone silent. Thereby, leaving them staring at an unhelpful “something went wrong” message instead of their usual AI-powered responses. Refreshing the page? No luck.
The outage hit just a day after OpenAI’s CEO raised alarms about the overwhelming demand for the company’s new image-creation tools. Consequently, warning users that they should brace for delays, bugs, and slower service.
“We are getting things under control, but you should expect new releases from OpenAI to be delayed, stuff to break, and for service to sometimes be slow as we deal with capacity challenges,” he admitted on Twitter.
In a previous post, he joked that the excitement around the new image feature was “melting” OpenAI’s servers, furthermore, hinting at the company’s struggle to scale fast enough to meet demand.
OpenAI quickly acknowledged the outage on its status page and claimed to have found a “mitigation”. But some users continued to experience disruptions. Strangely, the issue didn’t seem to affect everyone, some users carried on as usual. And leaving others wondering why they had been locked out.
Social media erupted with frustration and humor. On Twitter and Reddit, users lamented their disrupted workdays, while others poked fun at their sudden dependence on AI-generated responses. Memes flooded in, with one user joking, “Without ChatGPT, I actually have to use my own brain. This is unacceptable.”

This isn’t OpenAI’s first brush with technical difficulties. Previous surges in traffic have led to sluggish performance and occasional outages. As AI tools become more embedded in daily life, the pressure on OpenAI’s infrastructure only increases.
Tech experts argue that OpenAI must invest in stronger computing resources to avoid these recurring issues. Some believe the company underestimated just how quickly ChatGPT would become a staple in people’s lives, and now, it’s scrambling to keep up.
For now, OpenAI reassures users that it’s actively working on improvements. Those still facing problems are encouraged to check OpenAI’s official status page for real-time updates—or, in the meantime, rediscover the art of thinking for themselves.
