Topping Nigerian charts isn’t worth celebrating – Burna Boy tells artists

Nigerian artist Damini Ogulu, popularly known as Burna Boy, has encouraged fellow musicians to set their sights beyond local fame and pursue international recognition.

He argued that achieving success solely within Nigeria isn’t something to be overly proud of. According to him, the revenue generated from one million streams in Nigeria is significantly lower—about $300 to €400—compared to $3,000 to €4,000 in Western countries.

The Grammy-winning artist, who refers to himself as the ‘African Giant,’ also cautioned his peers not to be misled by online popularity in Nigeria, particularly from social media polls and fan bases. He emphasized that such support rarely translates to tangible outcomes like filling up arenas globally.

“Dear artists, don’t be fooled by Twitter polls or Naija social media fans. They won’t show up to fill stadiums for you anywhere in the world.

1,000,000 UK streams = $3,000–€4,000
1,000,000 US streams = $3,000–€4,000
1,000,000 EU streams = $3,000–€4,000”
