Akpabio petitions IGP over assassination claim, wants Natasha prosecuted

Senate President Godswill Akpabio petitioned Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to investigate suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for creating what he considered to be false allegations about being a target for assassination.

A petition written on April 3 included Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice Lateef Fagbemi, SAN as a recipient. It alleges three offenses against Akpoti-Uduaghan including defamation and incitement and giving false criminal statements that potentially endanger public peace and democratic order.

Akpoti-Uduaghan made damaging remarks at a Kogi State homecoming rally on April 1st which she used to blame Akpabio for ordering former Governor Yahaya Bello alongside current Governor Usman Ododo to kill her so they could attribute the attack to political opponents in her constituency.

Akpabio issued a firm denial of the baseless allegation terming it a malicious blackmail scheme that lacked evidence while attributing a political agenda to it.

The accusation against him holds no truth according to his statement. The statement indicates a self-serving scheme to fuel political turmoil while controlling public opinion while placing my life at risk.

The security forces needed to respond urgently because the accusation spread rapidly across social and traditional media networks.

Akpabio demands enforcement of criminal defamation laws together with punishment against public incitement and false accusations which threaten public peace.

During his speech the Senate President issued a warning about political leaders who exploit false information to obtain power since such actions.AllArgsConstructor officers erode trust in the public and undermine democratic principles.

According to Akpabio this political dispute has transformed into something greater than partisan rivalry. Leaders should bear responsibility for their statements when those expressions could trigger public disturbances.

The petition caused National Assembly political tension after ruling elite supporters suspended their principal critic Akpoti-Uduaghan.
