Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President of the Dangote Group, has revealed that a powerful “cabal” within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector continues to resist the progress of his $20 billion refinery project.

Speaking at an investor forum in Lagos on Friday, May 2, and reported by international news outlet Semafor, Africa’s richest man expressed confidence in overcoming the opposition, affirming his resolve to see the project through.

“For a very, very long time, those who have profited immensely from government-subsidised oil imports into Nigeria have been working to sabotage the $20 billion refinery located in Lekki, Lagos,” Dangote said.
He also noted that these vested interests have been behind efforts to undermine President Bola Tinubu’s removal of petrol subsidies and are actively trying to obstruct the refinery’s smooth operation.

Despite the challenges, Dangote emphasized his determination to prevail, describing himself as a seasoned fighter who is ready for the battle ahead.
“We’re fighting, and the fight is not yet finished. But I have been fighting all my life, and I am ready and 100 percent sure I will win at the end of the day,” Dangote said, according to the publication.
It’s worth noting that the Dangote Refinery began selling petrol in September 2024, a move that significantly reduced Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel.
