Leeds United go to the Premier League as champions of the second division

Leeds United clinched the Championship title on goal difference after a dramatic final day, edging out Burnley as both teams finished the season with 100 points. Meanwhile, Luton Town suffered a second consecutive relegation on Saturday.

Leeds faced an early setback against Plymouth Argyle when a Sam Byram own goal put them behind, but Wilfried Gnonto equalized eight minutes into the second half. With Burnley leading Millwall, Leeds needed a late winner—and Tottenham Hotspur loanee Manor Solomon delivered in stoppage time, sealing a 2-1 victory that confirmed Plymouth’s relegation.

Although Burnley secured a 3-1 win over Millwall, they were denied the title due to Leeds’ superior goal difference.

Both Leeds and Burnley had already secured promotion to the Premier League last month by locking in the top two spots.

Sheffield United finished third with 90 points after a 1-1 draw against Blackburn Rovers, who ended the season in seventh place, just two points shy of the final playoff position.

In the Championship playoffs, Sheffield United will face Bristol City, who secured sixth place with 68 points, while fourth-placed Sunderland (76 points) will go up against Frank Lampard’s Coventry City, who finished fifth with 69 points.

The two-legged semi-finals are scheduled between May 8 and 13, with the final set for May 24.

LUTON TOWN SUFFERS BACK-TO-BACK RELEGATION

At the other end of the table, Luton Town became just the fourth club in history to suffer consecutive relegations from the Premier League. Having been in the top flight just a year ago, they will now begin next season in League One.

Joining them in the third tier is Cardiff City, who ended the season at the bottom of the table following a 4-2 loss to Norwich City.

Interestingly, Norwich and Cardiff were led by former Arsenal teammates Jack Wilshere and Aaron Ramsey, both of whom stepped in as interim managers last month.
