Nigerian boxer Olanrewaju collapses, dies during Ghana bout

Former National and West African light-heavyweight champion Segun ‘Success’ Olanrewaju passed away from a match collapse during competition at Ghana.

At the Fight Night 15 event of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra Olanrewaju faced Ghanaian boxer Jon Mbanugu.

The reports state that Olanrewaju was point-leading but he passed out during the match.

The public could see a video recording of his ring collapse through social media. Medical attempts failed to save the 40-year-old fighter who lost his life which ended his mixed professional record of 24 fights with 13 victories and 8 losses and 3 draws.

The athletic community paid tribute to Olanrewaju through their mourning at his death because they understood his impact on boxing in Nigeria and across West Africa. He received the National title alongside the West African light-heavyweight championship throughout his boxing career.

There remains no official confirmation about the reason behind his death as per the latest available information.

Several Nigerian boxers have experienced fatal conclusions in their ring competitions throughout history. During the National Sports Festival in December 2022 at Asaba Delta State Chukwuemeka Igboanugo passed away after being struck by a punch. The tragic passing of Olanrewaju continues to bring attention to sport safety regulations in the entire region.
